The Anglo-Norse Society has very kindly invited our members to a tour os Strawberry Hill House, Twickenham.

Horace Walpole (1717-1797) was a pivotal figure in 18th Century society, literature, art and architecture. The third son of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first Prime Minister, Horace was author of ‘The Castle of Otranto’, the world’s first Gothic novel, and founder of Strawberry Hill House and its collection of treasures. From 1739-41, Walpole embarked on a Grand Tour and European influences, such as from gothic cathedrals, can be seen in Strawberry Hill House’s design. Built as his summer residence in 1747, the castle (or villa) was a key factor in the emergence of Gothic Revival architecture that grew throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries.

The guided tour will last approx. 90 minutes and there will be an opportunity to view the gardens and to visit the on-site Garden Café.
